A Micro Business is defined as a company with fewer than 10 employees. Yet these tiny business account for 75% of the businesses out there according to SBA.gov.
The term Microentrepreneur has recently become popular and refers primarily of solopreneurs, freelancers – those who work alone or only have a couple of part-time employees.
Being a micro business owner or a microentrepreneur comes with a unique set of needs:
- Budgets are small
- Resources are limited
- Time is maxed out
- The owner wears all the hats
- Most do not have critical skills to scale their business
In other words, the heart and vision are there, but the time, resources, and skills are often lacking. This isn’t true of every micro business or microentrepreneur, however, for most – it is.
When I opened my first business, it was out of a need to pay rent as a single mom – while desperate to stay home with my toddler. I drug him along as I cleaned and painted houses in exchange for rent. But I didn’t have the know-how to scale my business so I took a job, leaving my son in the care of family while at work.
A few years later, I had remarried and felt it was time to hang up the J.O.B and go back in business. This time I was a little more successful, but it came at the cost of losing money from bad decisions and thousands of hours of teaching myself how to do the job of 10 people. All because I couldn’t afford to hire anyone or pay for most courses or coaching. (Or, rather, I didn’t appropriate the proper value to certain opportunities)
Over the years, I did purchase courses as I could and hired coaches that were too expensive for my budget. I never paid myself for many years, but I received an invaluable education.
